That’s exactly what happened in southwest Detroit earlier this week when an underground water pipeline burst, turning an entire block into an icy time capsule.
A video that’s been making the rounds on Reddit shows cars and streets encased in thick layers of ice, leaving residents stunned.

According to the BBC, the incident happened on Monday, February 17, when a nearly 100-year-old water main––a large underground pipe that supplies water to buildings––gave way.
With temperatures plummeting to -21°C, the escaping water froze almost instantly. Streets transformed into icy traps, with vehicles completely frozen in place.
The city mayor confirmed the rescue of at least 54 adults, 22 children, and 12 pets.
Residents say they appreciate the city’s help through the difficult times but hope everything is back to normal soon.
The city is reminding impacted residents that they can use Uber for free to get to and from work and the grocery store, but the ride must be ordered through the city by calling the Emergency Hotline at 313-774-5261.
