This Valentine’s Day, love is in the air and Sam Smith is breathing it deep into their lungs.
In celebration of the holiday, the musician has shared the tender new ballad “Love Is a Stillness,” released alongside a grayscale video that finds pure romance on every corner in New York City.
“This song is such a special song to me and because it’s Valentine’s Day I wanted to share this with you as a gift to say I love you,” Smith shared in a statement.
Directed by Haya Waseem, the “Love Is a Stillness” video featured a cast of more than two dozen people sharing glimpses into passing moments of love and care.
There’s a young couple slow dancing under a cluster of balloons, an older couple glancing out of the train window, and a group of women filming silly videos together. Smith makes an appearance towards the end, swaying to the sound of their own record.
“Love is a stillness I never knew/You are the ground when I’m not strong/Even the silence remembers you/You’re like a rock in a rolling song,” they sing. “For all my mistakes/You’re there to share the weight/When every morning breaks/It’s like spring has sprung.”
“Love Is a Stillness” marks the latest release from Smith since they shared the 10th anniversary edition of In the Lonely Hour last year. “Revisiting the start of my career has been the most incredible experience.
I will always be the most proud of In the Lonely Hour as it was my first baby steps into music,” they said at the time. “I listen back to the album now and it feels like looking back at old photos, a mix of emotions, but I love the record and I still love singing these songs so much.
This album was written about a period of unrequited love in my life. It’s a real life coming-of-age story.”
